Disguised as large, low buildings scattered throughout greater Los Angeles, sound stages and small studios play a vital role in the entertainment production industry. They are also prime candidates for solar energy solutions. Lightstorm Entertainment Inc. (LEI), the film industry’s most technologically advanced production company, chose CSI Electrical Contractors to install the three large roof-mounted PV arrays on separate buildings. In total, the system produces  959 kilowatts, enough clean energy to power the sound stages and offices on LEI’s Manhattan Beach, Calif., campus.

The 3,692 solar modules were installed on the studio’s sound-proof barrel-shaped roofs, on more than 1,500 attachment points. CSI provided a custom-designed mounting system to follow the contours of the roof, affording maximum power output and minimal roof penetrations. The studio’s limited parking area translated into zero lay down area, requiring CSI’s logistics expertise in managing just-in-time materials deliveries.

Adding to the complexity of the construction process, CSI completed the project in an active working environment, coordinating with each sound stage’s production team to ensure that no disruptions occurred during filming. Despite all of these challenges, CSI completed the installation on schedule.
